Jewelry Insurance, Explained
This content is provided by Jewelers Mutualยฎ Group.
Questions about protecting jewelry come up often. What is blanket jewelry insurance? What does it cover? How is it different from what I already have? This guide answers the common ones in plain terms.
What is blanket jewelry insurance?
Blanket jewelry insurance covers multiple pieces of jewelry under one policy, with one coverage limit that you choose. Instead of insuring each piece separately, you protect your collection as a whole. That includes what you already own and what you just bought, up to your selected limit.
Rings, watches, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, cuff links, and brooches all qualify. If you wear it, it is likely covered.
why does it matter?
Jewelry can be expensive to replace, and its value can change over time. If a piece is lost, stolen, or damaged, you pay for the repair or replacement yourself unless coverage applies. Jewelry insurance exists to help with that cost.
Doesn't my homeowners insurance already cover my jewelry?
Possibly, in part. But it can be limited. According to Jewelers Mutual, standard homeowners policies typically have low coverage limits, exclusions for specific losses, and high deductibles. Homeowners insurance usually covers only about $1,000 to $2,500 for jewelry, and without a rider, you could pay the rest out of pocket.
There is also the matter of your rate. Filing a jewelry claim under your homeowners policy can raise your homeowners premium or lead to non-renewal.
What it does not cover?
Preventative maintenance, unattended auto, checked baggage, and data are not covered. This is not a complete list of exclusions.
What does blanket jewelry insurance cover?
Blanket jewelry insurance covers accidental damage or loss, theft, disappearance, fire, wind, and hail. Coverage follows you while you travel worldwide.
