Lauren and Ethan first met on a double date, just not with each other.
One of Ethan's friends invited Lauren, and Ethan brought someone else. The group spent the day in Sedona, wandering through little shops together. At one stop, everyone started picking out blankets. Lauren found one she loved, and before she had much time to think about it, Ethan offered to buy it for her.
It was a small, unexpected gesture, but Lauren remembers thinking, "I love you."
As they spent more time together, she noticed the way Ethan loved the people around him. She saw how close he was with his family, and before long, that same sense of belonging became part of her own life. The more she learned about him, the more certain she became that he was someone who would choose her wholeheartedly.
the proposal
Lauren never pictured a grand proposal. She only knew two things: she wanted a round diamond, and she wanted to be surprised.
Ethan planned a quiet evening near South Mountain Park and Preserve. They went to dinner first, then drove toward the mountain just before sunset. He had planned everything around the park's closing time so they could make it to the top.
When they arrived, though, the gate was already closed.
For a moment, it looked like the plan was over before it had even started. Ethan wasn't ready to give up.
By chance, he had two longboards in the back of his car. Together, they figured out how to use them to carefully get past the exit spikes and make their way up the mountain.
Once they reached the top, Ethan propped up his phone as if they were about to take a photo together.
Instead, he got down on one knee.
Lauren had no idea it was coming.
The proposal was everything she had hoped for: quiet, and just the two of them.
THE LITTLE THINGS THAT LAST
Some memories have stayed with Lauren more than any others.
The blanket from Sedona. The trip up the mountain. The feeling of slipping the ring onto her finger for the first time. And the way Ethan whistles when he's happy.
Even now, if she sleeps in and hears him whistling while he's with their kids, she knows exactly what it means. He's happy. He's home.
That's what Lauren loves most about him: the way he pours his whole heart into the people he loves.
